Balestier

Balestier is a residential and commercial area situated in central Singapore, a place rich in historical tales, beautiful houses and cheap condos, apartments and rooms for rent, as well as attractive dining establishments and local stores. Being lined just north of Orchard Road, along the North-South Line, Balestier has kept the vintage charm of Singapore, but embraced the modern innovations and facilities.

Balestier History

Balestier started its story 180 years ago, when the tigers roamed free in the woods and temples were the beating heart of the community. This area witnessed the long and interesting journey of Singapore from a British trading post to the spectacular, modern city it is today.

It received its name after Joseph Balestier, the first United States Consul of Singapore and the owner of a 1,000-acre sugarcane plantation that was known as the Balestier Plantation.

The district witnessed many events, such as the 1911 Chinese revolution, and was also scenic enough to become a set for classic Malay films. Coffee is still brewed in the traditional way here and is savored along with freshly baked bread and pastries.
